Course Name: Introduction to Visual Thinking (DSGN 2113)

Instructor: Brenda M. Segone

Course Description: What if you were looking without seeing? What if sight didn’t necessarily guarantee insight, unless you knew where to look or what to look for? The title, the date, the colors, the layout, the historical context, the placement are some of the clues you will practice finding and decoding, in order to see more than meets the eye. Learning to read visuals is not only a wonderful adventure into the world of iconic imagery from art and design history but a crucial ability that will help you make the right decision in eating, shopping, thinking, fighting or feeling.

In 3-5 years, I hope my students…

  • Have confidence in their ability to engage with visuals through a study of the medium, the composition, and the application of analytical tools
  • Understand that their own authentic inquiry can uncover new meanings and new connections between visuals and other disciplines like cinema and literature
  • Cultivate a transformed way of seeing, interpreting and critiquing the visual world around them.
  • Develop a passion for visual communication that drives independent exploration and discovery of new works or deep investigations
